Development of a computational cognitive architecture for intelligent virtual character
نویسندگان
چکیده
A development of a computational cognitive architecture for the simulation of intelligent virtual characters is described in this paper. By specializing and adapting from an existing structure for a situated design agent, we propose three process models—reflexive, reactive and reflective—which derive behavioural models that underlie intelligent behaviours for these characters. Various combinations of these process models allow intelligent virtual characters to reason in a reflexive, reactive and/or reflective manner according to the retrieval, modification and reconstruction of their memory contents. This paper offers an infrastructure for combining simple reasoning models, found in crowd simulations, and highly deliberative processing models or reasoning, found in ‘heavy’ agents with high-level cognitive abilities. Intelligent virtual characters simulated via this adapted architecture can exhibit system level intelligence across a broad range of relevant tasks. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed architecture, we describe the effect of the reflexive, reactive and reflective processes on a virtual character in our virtual tour application. Cognitive and Computational Models in Interactive Narrative
In this paper, we set out a basic approach to the modeling of narrative in interactive virtual worlds. This approach adopts a bipartite model taken from narrative theory, in which narrative is composed of story and discourse. In our approach, story elements – plot and character – are defined in terms of plans that drive the dynamics of a virtual environment. Discourse elements – the narrative’s...
متن کاملConceptual Design Scheme for Virtual Characters
The aim of this paper is to describe some theoretical considerations about virtual character design. In recent years, many prototypes of cognitive and behavioral architectures have been developed to simulate human behavior in artificial agents. Analyzing recent studies, we assume that there exists a variety of computational models and methods in order to increase the cognitive abilities of the ...
متن کاملAn Architecture for Personality-based, Nonverbal Behavior in Affective Virtual Humanoid Character
As humans we perceive other humans as individually different based – amongst other things – on a consistent pattern of affect, cognition, and behavior. Here we propose a biologically and psychologically grounded cognitive architecture for the control of nonverbal behavior of a virtual humanoid character during dynamic interactions with human users. Key aspects of the internal states and overt b...
متن کاملAn Emotion Model of 3D Virtual Characters in Intelligent Virtual Environment
Human emotion is related to stimulus and cognitive appraisal. Emotion is very important to entertainment application of virtual reality. Emotion model of 3D virtual characters is a challenging branch of Intelligent Virtual Environment (IVE). A believable 3D character should be provided with emotion and perception. In general, a virtual character is regarded as an autonomous agent with sense, pe...
متن کاملAn artificial life approach for the animation of cognitive characters
This paper addresses the problem of cognitive character animation. We propose the use of finite state machines for the behavioral control of characters. Our approach lays on the idea that the cognitive character arises from the evolutionary computation embedded in the artificial life simulation, which in our case is implemented by the finite state machine. We present some of the results of the ...
